In the first month of the implementation of the Stablecoins Ordinance in Hong Kong, there were 77 expressions of interest (EOIs) as of August 31 in applying for stablecoin licenses, a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) disclosed. These entities include banks, technology companies, securities/ asset management/ investment firms, e-commerce, payment institutions, and startups/ web3 companies.

The spokesperson mentioned that the HKMA will not disclose the list of entities that have expressed interest or formally submitted applications. They emphasized that expressing interest or submitting an application for a stablecoin license, as well as communication between the HKMA and the relevant entities, is merely part of the licensing process and does not constitute approval or recognition of the likelihood of obtaining a license. The final issuance of a license will depend on whether the application meets the licensing criteria.
