Australia has become the world's first country to ban children under 16 from using social media, with the ban taking effect today (10th). The prohibition applies to platforms including TikTok, Alphabet(GOOGL.US)'s YouTube and Meta(META.US)'s Instagram and Facebook. Pursuant to the new legislation, the top ten social media platforms are required to block children's access to their services starting at midnight local time. Failure to comply could result in fines of up to AUD49.5 million (approx. US$33 million). Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called it 'a proud day for families' and hailed the legislation as proof that online harm can be curbed. AAStocks Financial News Website: www.aastocks.com |
