Markets were on the sideline for the release of US non-farm payroll and inflation data for last month. The DJIA settled down 41 points, or less than 0.1%. In Hong Kong, the HSI opened 80 points lower, or 0.3%, at 25,547; the HSCEI opened 31 points lower, or 0.4%, at 8,886; and the HSTECH opened 30 points lower, or 0.6%, at 5,467.

In the tech sector, BABA-W (09988.HK), MEITUAN-W (03690.HK), NTES-S (09999.HK), and BILIBILI-W (09626.HK) opened 0.7-1.1% lower; BIDU-SW (09888.HK) opened 1.5% lower; TENCENT (00700.HK), KUAISHOU-W (01024.HK), and JD-SW (09618.HK) opened 0.1-0.3% lower. Chip stocks SMIC (00981.HK) and HUA HONG SEMI (01347.HK) opened 0.3% and 0.4% lower, respectively.

For autos, BYD COMPANY (01211.HK) opened 0.5% lower, while XIAOMI-W (01810.HK) and XPENG-W (09868.HK) opened 1.3% and 1.7% lower respectively, and NIO-SW (09866.HK) opened 1.9% higher. Tesla (TSLA.US) rallied more than 3%, nearing its all-time high. Battery stock CATL (03750.HK) opened 1.9% higher at HK$529.
