The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) recently announced that China's births for 2025 were 7.92 million, below the expectations of CLSA and milk formula industry players, CLSA published a research report saying. Considering the higher base in 2024, the YoY decline in birth population reached 17%.

The lower-than-expected birth numbers imply intensified competition in the infant milk formula (IMF) market, CLSA noted. For companies, product structure and sales momentum are crucial.

As the birth peak in 2024 gradually shifted to stage 3 products, companies with a stable customer base in stage 1 and 2 products and the ability to gain consumer trust are expected to benefit more from existing customers extension into stage 3 products.

CLSA preferred YILI (600887.SH) and H&H INTL HLDG (01112.HK) over CHINA FEIHE (06186.HK), all of which are rated at Outperform, with target prices of RMB34/ $16.4/ $4.9, respectively.
