Yasushi Kaneko, Japan's Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, announced at a press conference that the country welcomed a total of around 42.7 million foreign tourists last year, the first time this figure has exceeded 40 million. Kaneko also revealed that Japan saw a YoY drop of 45% in Chinese visitors to around 330,000 last December. Analysts described this decline as the most significant economic impact following Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's erroneous remarks related to Taiwan, which led to heightened tensions between China and Japan.
