The Hong Kong government will announce the Budget next month, with public attention on civil servant salaries. Secretary for the Civil Service, Ingrid Yeung, stated today (27th) that the Pay Trend Survey Committee has been holding meeting regularly, and the authorities will balance the overall financial situation of the government. Some legislators questioned the leniency of the standards for annual salary point increments for civil servants, arguing it loses its motivational effect. Northwest New Territories legislator Mark Chong said that in the business sector, "incremental jump" is for very proactive and outstanding employees. The civil service system has become routine, losing its original incentive function. In response, Secretary Yeung said that the bureau will strengthen the relevant assessment mechanism and hopes to report to the committee in the first half of the year on how to strengthen the assessment mechanism.
